We know that some people may be a little hesitant about committing to a course, especially those who are thinking of a career change. So to give people a chance to see what is involved, we offer Taster Days.
Come and see what happens at our Academy, then decide if they wish to sign up for a course. In order to start a course, we recommend that everyone should undertake a taster Day first.
Typically, the morning training will consist of a brief Induction, followed by theoretical training from 1 or 2 units. After a 1 hour lunch break, the afternoon will be spent in the cutting room, practicing styling on dolls heads, and you may have the opportunity to observe or assist with a service in the main salon.
Hours (approx) 10am – 3.30pm. You can choose your preferred day, Tuesday to Saturday. There is no obligation to take a course after.
Taster days are a requirement before any courses are taken with us.
Places for our Taster Days are limited and must be booked in advance.
When trainees come and collect their certificates after completion, we like to get a picture of them being handed over by one of our Tutors.
We’ve had a few requests to put together a gallery, so have a look…

You do not need an existing hairdressing or barbering qualification to start a course at LAFHAB. You do not need to hold specific qualifications (eg literacy/numeracy) to undertake a course, however as all teaching is in English, students are expected to be able to understand, speak and write in English to a good standard. If English is not your primary language then we can assess your level through testing.
The level 2 NVQ courses are wholly recognised and sufficient for someone to work proficiently in a salon/barbers. Level 3 courses will take you further and train you to a higher standard and be more specialised, and is particularly recommended for those wanting to own their own salon.
We only offer VTCT-accredited NVQs, these are recognised not only in the UK but across Europe and the rest of the world. Different countries have different requirements, therefore those looking to be accredited to work overseas must contact an industry body of their chosen country to check the legal requirements with their country of choice themselves before commencing a course with us.
We don’t work to the academic calendar, instead Students can start on almost any date. The longest anyone would have to wait for a start date is usually 1 week.
We offer Students the option of specifying the days they
want to train, around their availability. This means they can train & learn
for 1,2,3, 4 or 5 days a week, and this can be different days each week. Also,
as part of our commitment to offer ‘Flexible Training’ we offer Saturday learning options. Training starts at 10am.
Learners who are paying in instalments may optionally wait
14 days between paying their deposit and starting, which is the ‘cooling off
period.’
Unlike colleges etc we don’t dictate your attendance. Our NVQ courses specify the average number of days to attend throughout the course. Because students can learn 1,2,3, 4 or 5 days a week, the course duration is determined by the chosen learning schedule.
As an example, the Level 2 Hairdressing course takes approximately 60 full-day lessons, at 2 days a week this could be completed within 30 weeks, 4 days a week could be 15 weeks.
The more frequently
you attend the quicker you may complete your course, we do require all students
to commit to attending a minimum 1 day a week.
We don’t have a specific uniform, however we have a dress code requesting sensible clothing and closed shoes.
We provide training materials and resources.
Learners will need to purchase a full training kit, a list will be provided upon starting. And also a tablet (eg iPad) or a laptop computer).
Learners will also require training heads (usually up to 4
for hairdressing or barbering), the first head is included and additional ones
required are available to purchase at the academy at discounted prices.
We provide our Learners with a letter confirming their course, which allows them to open trade accounts with Salon Services, Dennis Williams etc.
We start with classroom-based theoretical training using HABIA’s own training materials for individual units, the next stage for most units is practising on training heads.
In addition to the
practical training, we regularly hold practical demonstrations.
When both Assessors and you feel that you are ready, you will then start performing services on real clients in the salon or barbers, under supervision. Throughout your course duration you may perform up to 100 client services which will give you a great deal of salon/barbers experience, we do not push anyone into this.
We provide one-to-one tuition and additional support where required, we have additional resources and support for people with Dyslexia or other learning difficulties. We also provide individual learning plans, and progress is tracked with periodic reviews.
Additional resources and tutoring are provided to students with dyslexia, so please let us know when your course commences.
The Hair and Barber Council's aim is to raise standards and
improve professionalism within the hairdressing and barbering industry by
encouraging every hairdresser and barber to join the UK Register of Qualified
Hairdressers and Barbers.
As a qualified hairdresser or barber who is striving to
generate a positive reputation in your area, being able to promote yourself as
a State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) or a State Registered Barber (SRB) will
immediately tell current and potential clients that you are a qualified,
professional hairdresser and/or barber.
In support of this, LAFHAB will provide the first year’s
membership to all trainees successfully completing their course, at no extra
cost (renewal is optional thereafter).
